Virginia May McCarthy

A short interment ceremony for the McCarthy’s will be at 2 p.m. Monday, June 25, 2018, at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Seville, Ohio. Family and friends should be at the gate by 1:30 p.m. Virginia May “Ginny” McCarthy of Columbus, Indiana, was welcomed into Heaven by her parents; husband, Daniel; brothers, Richard “Dick” and Robert “Bobby” Miller; brother-in-law, Donald (Stormy) McCarthy; and sister-in-law, Kathleen (Jim Campbell) McCarthy on December 31, 2017. Ginny was born in Findlay, Ohio, on October 12, 1922, the daughter of Chester V. and Hazel May Opperman Miller. She married Daniel J. McCarthy on September 18, 1964. He went to Heaven on November 21, 2016. Ginny was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduation she started working for the Erie Railroad retiring at what eventually became Conrail in 1982 after 36 years. Before meeting Dan she was married to another serviceman named Charles Blackley on June 19, 1948, who went missing in action in Korea on November 28, 1950, and never returned. Ginny enjoyed golf and volunteering at the Zoo. During retirement Ginny and Dan became “Snow Birds” and traveled between Parma, Ohio, in the summer and Lake Fairways in North Fort Myers, Florida, in the winter so they could both enjoy their mutual love of chasing the little white ball and each other year round. Her red hair matched her feisty personality. Although they had no children, they treated their nieces and nephews as their own. Ginny is survived by her nephews, Bob (Diane) and Ricky (Kelly) Miller and nieces, Margaret Campbell (Iris) and Ann and Kate McCarthy; and sister-in-law, Josie Miller. She is also survived by a great-nephew, Ricky Miller and two great-nieces, Wendy Fletcher and Darby Miller; along with a great-great niece, Meghan Fletcher; and a great-great nephew, Gabe Fletcher. Following their wishes, Ginny and Dan will be together forever at the Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio. A private memorial service will be held there at a later date. Ginny’s family would like to thank the staff of Keepsake Village for their care, compassion and friendship over the last year. Through their efforts, Ginny felt loved while waiting to go home to be with Dan. She greatly enjoyed the activities at the facility especially going out to eat on Tuesdays with the group and also enjoyed coming over to Bob and Diane’s for some homemade spaghetti and meatballs. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Activity Fund at Keepsake Village, c/o Meena Maharjan, Activity Director.
