Gary Ervin Burriss

Gary Ervin Burriss, a devoted family man and respected firefighter, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025, in Elizabethtown, Indiana. Born on November 21, 1953, in Columbus, the son of William and Dorothy Sanders Burriss. Gary married the love of his life, Martha Jean Ammerman December 21, 1974, she survives. Gary dedicated his life to serving his community and nurturing his family with unwavering love and support. Gary's career with the Columbus City Fire Department spanned an impressive 30 years, during which he served in several key positions, including that of Fire Chief. His leadership and vision were instrumental in the establishment of Station 6, a testament to his commitment to the safety and well-being of the city he so cherished. His colleagues remember him not only as a great leader but as a brother in arms who stood at the forefront of every challenge. Beyond his service as a firefighter, Gary was a fervent advocate for his fellow firefighters. As President of the local firefighters' union and an officer with the state firefighters’ union, he was a tireless champion for the rights and recognition of the brave men and women who served alongside him. His voice was one of reason and compassion, always seeking to mentor, uplift, and support his department family. Gary's love extended beyond his professional life into his personal world as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His family was the cornerstone of his life. He taught them how to be resourceful and to live life to the fullest. He instilled in them the values of courage, integrity, and kindness. His guidance and wisdom will continue to resonate with his loved ones for generations to come. Gary's legacy is one of selfless service, unwavering dedication, and profound love. His impact on the Columbus community and beyond will be felt for many years to come. As we remember Gary, we celebrate a life lived with honor, a life that touched so many others in profound and lasting ways. A memorial service will be held at 12 noon, on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Jewell Rittman Family Funeral Home with Pastor Tracy McIntire officiating. Calling hours will be from 10:00 am until service time at Jewell Rittman Family Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make memorial donations to Crossroads Community Church, where Gary was a longtime member, to the Children’s Wing. Donations may also be made to Good Shepherd radio WYGS. Gary is survived by his wife, children, Sara Beth (Will Kubiszewski) Burriss, Jana Lynn Burriss; grandchildren, Eva Burriss, Daily Kubiszewski, Bobby Kubiszewski, sister, Jan Burriss; and a best friend of 65 years, Russ Hollinger. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Caleb Aaron Burriss; a daughter, Myriah Renee’ Burriss; brothers, Douglas E. Burriss and Gregory K. Burriss; The family has requested that the burial be private and for family only.
