Basil R Brummet August 8, 1924 - May 23, 2020 Basil R Brummet, 95, passed from this life at Life Care Hospice in Wooster, OH after being debilitated by a fall in his home in Columbus on March 26, 2020 that resulted in a vertebral compression fracture. Born in Indianapolis, IN to James and Ethel Brummet, he grew up in Helmsburg, IN on a small farm and lived all of his adult life in Columbus, IN. Basil served in the Navy during WWII on the USS Cuyama as a Gunner’s Mate, 3rd class, and was discharged on Valentine’s Day, 1946. He came home to take up his life-long vocation as a tool & die maker at Product Engineering Company (PECO). He became Vice President at Hartup Tool & Die, and subsequently formed BB&H Tool, Inc. with with two partners. He retired in 1986. Basil never gave up his passion as a “maker” continuing in his basement to create beautiful folding knives and carving knifes, to repair and build clocks, including a beautiful handmade wooden works clock. It was his pride and joy. He enjoyed his computer and iPad for looking at historic and military websites and keeping track of his finances. Basil took the September 2014 Indiana Honor Flight to Washington, DC, receiving his WWII Veteran’s cap which he proudly wore ever since. Basil and his wife of 72 years, Vera, enjoyed their 29 winters in Sarasota, FL where they lived in Park East Club. They were a fixture of the Park participating in the weekly Saturday breakfast get togethers and programs. Basil helped many friends at Park East - he could always fix anything. He loved to fish - whether in a pond, a lake, or the Gulf of Mexico. He had many great fishing buddies and lots of fish stories and pictures. Visiting Siesta Key Beach with Vera, feeding the seagulls, and traveling around Florida were highlights. They enjoyed several cruises in the Caribbean, to Hawaii, and to Alaska in 2000 with their daughter and son-in-law. The next year they all made a wonderful trip to London and Paris. Basil was a long time member of St. John’s Lodge of Free & Accepted Masonry in Columbus and attained the 32nd Degree of The Scottish Rite in the Indianapolis Valley. He was a member of the East Columbus United Methodist Church and Fidelis Bible class. He enjoyed riding with the Whispering Eagles motorcycle “gang” until age 80. Basil and Vera enjoyed square dancing in Columbus and Sarasota. They loved their daughter’s and son-in-law’s Samoyed dogs and alpacas, attending many shows together. Basil Brummet never met a stranger, he was an eternal optimist with a winning smile and a generous heart. People gravitated to Basil and enjoyed his stories of growing up in Brown County, of serving in the Navy, of his work as a tool & die maker, and of all the animals and people he loved. Most of all Basil loved his wife Vera and his daughter Shauna, her husband Jeff, and his little dogs Winkie and Diamond. He wil be missed by so very many people. Basil is survived by his wife, Vera and daughter Shauna Renea Brummet and her husband, Jeffrey A Skinner. Surviving relatives include several nephews and nieces and their children. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers and sister. Arrangements have been made with Jewell-Rittman Funeral Home, 3855-25th St., Columbus, IN 47203.
