Thomas "Tom" Young, a cherished soul known for his patriotism, love for family, and zest for life, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2025, in Columbus, Indiana. Born on December 5, 1946, in North Vernon, Indiana, to Floyd and Lillian Young. Tom's early years were marked by a strong sense of community and a love for his country, which would become a defining aspect of his life. He married Jessie Ann White on November 5, 1982. Tom proudly served his nation during the Vietnam era, a testament to his unwavering dedication and bravery. His service to his country was a source of great pride, and it instilled in him values that he carried throughout his life. After his honorable discharge, Tom transitioned to civilian life with the same sense of duty and commitment that characterized his time in the military. In his professional life, Tom was known for his reliability and skill. He retired from Columbus Container, and also worked at Pyramid Paper, where his attention to detail and work ethic were highly valued. He also spent time at Frank Anderson Tire, where his hands-on knowledge and problem-solving abilities made him a respected figure. Later, he brought his warm smile and friendly conversation to the community at Casey General Store, becoming a familiar face to many. Beyond his work, Tom had passions that brought joy to both himself and those around him. He was an avid fisherman, finding solace and excitement in the quiet moments by the water. His love for dirt track racing was unmatched, the thrill he got racing was a big part of his younger years. His later years in life you could often find him cheering on his favorite drivers, sharing the thrill of the race with friends and family. Tom's talents extended to the kitchen, where he was a great cook, known for his delicious meals that would bring everyone to the table. His recipes and dishes were a blend of love and skill, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Above all, Tom was a family man. He cherished every moment spent with his family, especially his children and grandchildren, who were the light of his life. His guidance, laughter, and stories enriched their lives, and his legacy will live on through them. Described as handy, Tom could fix almost anything, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand. His resourcefulness and ability to solve problems were admired by all who knew him. Tom is survived by his wife, Jessie and children, Ellen Dawn (Drenda) Smith-Young, Stacy Moody, Goldie Huddleston, Becky Haley, and Teresa Moody; a brother, Chuck Young; 20 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, and a son, Thomas Wayne Young Jr.; his sisters, Gloria White and Diana Merit. A time of gathering will be held from 4:00 -8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.
