John E. Romine

John E. Romine July 18, 1913 - March 02, 2011 John Evan Romine, 97, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at the Silver Oaks Campus with his family by his side. He was the rock-solid anchor for his family; a man of character the likes of which are scarce in todays world. Although his presence will be sorely missed, his family rejoices at the knowledge of his grand reunion in heaven. John was born July 18, 1913, near the Bartholomew-Decatur county line, to Frank Floyd and Edna Ruth (Quick) Romine. He was the second of six children born to them. He was named after his two grandfathers, John Riley Romine and Evan Snead Quick. His mother passed away when he was 16 and he and his older brother, Wayne, took on the responsibility of raising their younger siblings. To help support the family, he began farming for his relatives. He met Helen Louise Muir in Sunday school at Burnsville and they were married April 20, 1935. They worked hand-in-hand to build a strong foundation for their family, first living in Jonesville where he farmed for his cousin Charlie Noblitt, and then later back in Rockcreek Township where he farmed for Ben Kroot. By 1951 they bought their farm on State Road 7. John retired from farming in 1976. Helen passed away May 7, 1984. He remarried Mrs. Fern (Ward) Artis June 6, 1986, and moved into town later that year. In addition to farming, he owned his own dump truck and hauled gravel for many years. He was the Rockcreek Township Road Superintendent and served on the Rockcreek Township Advisory Board and was a member of Burnsville Christian Church. When he was 86 years old he took a ride in a hot air balloon and was so happy to get to survey from the air the land he had worked most of his life. John is survived by his second wife; his children, Janice Tempest of Columbus, Sharon (Jim) West of Shelby County and Terry (Judy) Romine of Elizabethtown; a sister, Rose Ramsey of Greenwood; grandchildren, Sandra (Dick) Waddle of Columbus, Christopher (Angie) West of Taylorsville, Shaun (Shannon) Williams of Elizabethtown, Christine West of Shelby County, Randy (Laurie) Tempest of Muncie, and Ryan (Abby) Romine of Scipio; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth West, Sidney Williams, John Waddle, Victoria West, Joseph Tempest, Kyle Tempest, Sam Williams, Evan Romine and Gabriel Romine; stepsons, Richard Artis, Lloyd Artis and Randy Artis, all of Elizabethtown; and a stepdaughter, Amy Artis of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Hazel (Gohn) Minor Romine; his first wife, Helen Romine; brothers, Wayne Romine and Earl Romine; sisters, Lavah Tuttle and Althea Redwine; a son-in-law, Joe Tempest; and a stepdaughter, Linda Artis. Funeral Information CALLING: Monday, March 7, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service. FUNERAL: Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Marcus Speer officiating. BURIAL: Garland Brook cemetery.
