Doris S. Parson August 02, 1941 - September 29, 2007 Doris S. Parson, 66, of Gilmore Street died Sept. 29, 2007 in Ripley County. Doris was a life member, past president and membership chairman for the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and a life member of the American Veterans Auxiliary # 5. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 23 years, the Fraternal Order of Eagles for 20 plus years and the Ladies of Moose for 13 years. She was currently employed at Columbus Housing Authority for 26 years. Her biggest love, after Chuck and family, was the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of which she was a member for 33 years and became a life member of in 1999. She was installed as Auxiliary President May 11, 2004 and has been president since. She was also the 9th district VFW Auxiliary chaplain. She faithfully attended all bi-monthly district meetings and semi-annual state meetings as well as, state convention each year at her own expense. She had attended VFW Ladies Auxiliary National Convention in 2004, 2006 and 2007. She shook hands with President Bush in 2004 and 2007, as well as having her picture taken with him this year. She also had her picture taken with Barack Obama in Kansas City this year. She fully supported all projects the VFW Auxiliary promoted, especially aid to Veterans Hospital, homeless veterans, cancer aid and research, youth activities, VFW National Childrens Home in Michigan and the local post improvements. She often donated items she won or purchased to make money for veterans support and aid projects. She purchased and set up a POW/MIA table at VFW Post 1987 in 2005 in honor of all POW/MIAs. She also was a big contributor to the local POW/MIA ceremonies that were held in September of 2006 and 2007 at City Hall. She was a true American citizen and humanitarian. She believed in helping anyone who needed help, any way she could. She was a safety patrol officer at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (gate and suites) since 1996. She organized and operated Bingo at VFW Post 1987. She collected Elvis memorabilia and loved Tony Stewart. She enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and friends and going fishing. Doris was born in Decatur County August 2, 1941, the daughter of Charles and Mary O. Fultz Powers. She married Charles E. Parson May 28, 1986. Mrs. Parson is survived by her husband, Charles E. Parson of Columbus; daughters, Wanda Perdue (Martin Davis), Pam Winkler, Mary Merrick-Cawein (Scott Cawein), and Patti Tasca-Wright (Duane Wright) all of Columbus; grandchildren, Tyler, Alan, Matt, Tisha, April, Marty, Trisha, Anna, Jonnie, Jakson, Kim, Kristy and Jake; 8 great grandchildren; brothers, Harold (Dorothy) Powers of Wisconsin, Ronald (Gwen) Powers of California and Jack (Brenda) Powers of Columbus; and sisters, Mary Louise Jayne of Southport, Maude Michael of Westport and Jessie Bowers of West Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mary O. Powers; a son, Charles E. Perdue; a grandchild, Angel Marie Merrick; a great grandchild, Devin Jordan Alvarez; brothers, John, Charles A., Jimmie, David and Gerald Gene Powers; and a sister, Lena Lenora Kirtman. Funeral Information FUNERAL: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2007 at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home. VISITATION: 3 until 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007 and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Friday. A VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 1987 memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday followed by a Moose Lodge #330 memorial service at 7:30 p.m. BURIAL: Lower Union Presbyterian Cemetery in Decatur County.
