James R. Porter

James R. Porter, 86, of Columbus, passed away at 2:21 a.m. Friday, October 11, 2024, at Columbus Regional Hospital. Jim was born on July 31, 1938, in Bloomington, IN to Lloyd Porter and Mildred Hitchcox Porter. He married Beverly S. Byrd on November 21, 1959. A proud Air Force veteran, Jim carried the discipline and camaraderie of his military service into his long-standing career at Cummins Engine Company, where he retired after 43 years of diligent work. His commitment to his job was paralleled only by his dedication to his faith as a devoted member of Sandy Hook United Methodist Church. Jim's passion for life was evident in his many interests. He was an avid fan of the Indianapolis 500, a testament to his love for speed and the thrill of the race. His loyalty to Indiana University Basketball spoke volumes about his unwavering support for local teams. Jim also found solace and joy in fishing, a pastime that allowed him to appreciate the tranquility of nature. Volunteering was another facet of Jim's life that showcased his generous spirit. He devoted time to the Atterbury-Bakalar Air Museum, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for aviation with others. Above all, Jim cherished the moments spent with his family and pets. These times were the cornerstone of his life, filled with laughter, stories, and the creation of lasting memories. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 19, 2024, at Sandy Hook United Methodist Church, 1610 Taylor Road, Columbus, IN 47203. Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. Jim will be laid to rest at Garland Brook Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to Sandy Hook United Methodist Church or Atterbury-Bakalar Air Museum, through the funeral home. Survivors include his wife, Beverly Porter; children, Wendy (Jim) Stevens of Mooresville, IN, Kathy (Jeff) Bergman of Fishers, IN, Tony (Angie) Porter of Scipio, IN; sister, Sandra (Dick) McClure of Carmel, IN; brother, Gary (Debbie) Porter of Fairbanks, AK; grandchildren, Craig (Chelsea) Stevens, Mike Stevens, Courtney Bergman, Brooke Bergman, Ross (Shania) Porter, Ashley (Marshall) Baxter; great-grandchildren, Mallory Stevens, Ryker Porter, Kaylie Porter, Kash Porter and Makalia Baxter. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Mildred Porter. Arrangements were entrusted to Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.
